The Richmond Chinese Community Network is an informal organization sponsored by the
organization of Chinese Americans Central Virginia Chapter. In cooperation with the
Chinese schools, Chinese organizations, and several local businesses, we are hoping
to create more opportunities for local Chinese to connect with one another, regardless
of demographic categories or national origin.
- Centralize informational resources for the local Chinese Community
- Share news and other information
- Maintain several Group E-mailing lists
- Organize events
- Help promote sub-group events
- Provide a United Front for the Chinese community within the mainstream community
- Establish an annual Lunar New Year Festival and Parade for the public
- Publish a monthly billingual Chinese-English newspaper
- Create a public space for the Chinese community
Within our community, several individuals not only share our hopes of uniting the local
Chinese; they also actively take part as volunteers. Unfortunately, these active individuals
might work only within their own small groups; and while these groups might have similar
objectives, there is currently no framework for resource sharing.
RCN wants to establish a committee structure, to allow for these smaller
groups to network and cooperate. It also allows for individuals who might not belong to a
specific organization to actively participate in an area where they are interested.
For example, all three Chinese Schools in Richmond have traditional dance groups; on top of that,
there is one adult dance group; and several individuals who want to see Chinese dance preserved
among our youth. Some of these people come from China, some from Taiwan, some Hong Kong; others
were born here. If the leadership of these groups maintains regular contact, then they can
help promote dance and to provide a point of contact for dance teachers, interested students,
and schools and businesses looking for performers.
Recognizing that many individuals do not have the time to volunteer in organizing, but still
want to participate in events and activities according to their interests, we are setting up
Interest Groups to allow these people to network; while the
Committees overseeing these interest groups can help to organize
events and moderate discussion on E-Mailing Lists.
